Yoga for Special Needs classes came about through my experience of working with Special Needs clients, both here in Sligo and in Asheville, North Carolina.
Through working as a Reflexologist on one to one basis, I had the opportunity to get to know the clients on an individual basis. In an effort to encourage relaxation during our sessions I began to incorporate simple deep breathing techniques. It was from this opportunity, as well as my experience of teaching yoga to many different levels of abilities (The North West Stroke Group, ICA groups, school children, etc) as well as my specialized training with the YTTC in working with Special Abilities, that these classes were born.
It’s a joy to teach a small class of Yoga students of varying ages and abilities- some grinning from ear to ear- and others looking very serious, but all very eager to do their Yoga. I say “their Yoga” because that is exactly what it is: every student comes as they are and works to the best of their ability. As one student recently said to me after class, “This Yoga, this really helps me.”
Classes are privately booked. Feel free to make contact through the below form if you would like your own Yoga for Special Needs class.
I was lucky enough to win a series of yoga classes with Lauren in a raffle, I had always wanted to try yoga but had been a bit apprehensive about starting, I shouldn’t have been. Lauren is a fantastic teacher, pushing each individual to their own personal achievements and taking the time to ensure that each person benefits out of each pose in every class. She also gives classes to my sister who has cerebral palsy and it is the highlight of her week. Even though being in a wheelchair she can’t fully participate in all the poses she really benefits from the sessions.
I have since moved away and in taking further yoga classes have realized how rare it is to be given the individual attention and encouragement Lauren gives automatically. She is not just a yoga teacher going through the motions, she provides guidance, encouraging you to challenge and push yourself while teaching you to listen to your body to know it’s limitations. Lauren’s class caters for all levels and is welcoming and accessible to all, give it a try!
